Without a doubt the very best commentary on the book of James. I, a Lutheran, had to take a class on James at a Wesleyan seminary. The textbooks assigned for the class were so-so, but I found myself more and more drawn to Dibelius' explanations. What stands out is the insight of viewing this as a collection like the book of Proverbs and not trying to shoehorn it into a tidy format like other New Testament letters. In addition Dibelius was able to view James through the historic Lutheran lens. While we are saved by grace through faith, Luther commends us to observe the Law because it is God's will for our lives. Dibelius moves the reader from the stale argument of social justice and personal righteousness into the realm of Kingdom living and proclaiming. Finally, Dibelius shows that James is a book of listening. Listening to the Spirit move through Law and Gospel allows the Kingdom to be proclaimed.
