The first time I heard James Blake was a few months ago, after reading a Pitchfork reviewer rave over his EPs. I had a listen, and couldn't quite digest this seemingly alien sound being pumped through my headset. Then James' eponymous album arrived and I had the chills the entire listen. There is nothing else like it out there. The tracks are marked with quiet, intense emotion. Every moment of silence, every blip, every piano chord, every vocal manipulation (or lack thereof in some cases) portrays a deeply-felt yearning sadness. Sometimes that emotion can be felt physically, especially if you turn up "Limit to your Love" and let the deep, vibrating bass pound your chest. It literally feels like the moment you find out your love doesn't love you back. This guy really knows what he's doing, and I can't wait to hear what he comes up with next. Oh and did I mention he has a wonderfully-broken, soulful voice? This guy can really croon. This album may take some patience, but it is well worth the perseverance. It's pretty much all I've been listening to for a week.If you like this album, check out his EPs. They are mind-bendingly good. Also, several of his DJ mixes are up on youtube. I highly recommend his mix of Untold's "Stop what you're doing," his Lil Wayne "A Milli" mix and his Bells Sketch material, which isn't available on Amazon currently.
