Books surveying the non-religious work of James Tissot are not easy to find at a good price, but this one is better than satisfactory on all counts.Pristine... I repeat PRISTINE copy of a fabulous book! Thank You!For the money it's fine...however the cover has a large sticker that was somewhat pulled off, which I feel should have downgraded the condition by the seller. I also found several $4.99 price tags on the cover and inside back cover.Beautiful pictures of his work, and edifying information about the artist.book exceeded my expectationsThere were 18 out of 40 pages of art plates that had been cut out. Thankfully I'm getting a full refund.Very happy with purchase. This book was exactly as posted. Appreciate the seller's honesty. This is a really beautiful collection of the works of the French painter James Tissot. It's a large scale book, 14" x 11" approx., a little thin - there are only 40 plates - but each is full-page, full-colour and the quality of the reproduction is excellent. There is a brief biographical essay with a smattering of additional illustrations and each plate has a descriptive note on the facing page. While the Impressionists were painting modern life in what was then considered an avant-garde painting style, artists like Tissot - realist-inspired painters, undoubtedly influenced by photography - were also painting modern life, albeit in Tissot`s case that of the affluent, upper-middle class. Tissot`s paintings of London society are beautifully rendered depictions of the glittering milieu of the place and period, often provoking speculation in the viewer (Is that old man really her husband? Which sister is the young man interested in?) the kind of themes that can make Victorian painting look trivial in the case of lesser artists - but not Tissot.Ruskin didn't like his work; but Ruskin - infamously - didn't like Whistler either; even Ruskin's supporters surely have to admit he was often a few colours short of a working palette in some of his judgements. It's a real shame this book is out of print; one can only hope it will re-appear sometime. Meanwhile, DO consider the Amazon market sellers for this second-hand; a hardback copy in good condition is certainly worth obtaining, this is a fine volume to have in your art library.* This review is specifically for the Pavilion published volume by Russell Ash; Amazon may have lumped it in with reviews for other books by other authors - do check with the seller before ordering. *This is a beautiful book, containing 40 full-page (10") high-quality colour plates of Tissot's famous works, each with a description and details of the subject. Tissot's biography takes up 9 pages. I felt that 20 or more would have been better, but what detail there is, is fascinating and reflects what we might already believe. "...he focuses his gaze on the daily lives of privileged classes to the almost total exclusion of landscapes or still-lifes..." And as we all know, "...his pictures are now among the most desired, the most admired and the most frequently reproduced of all Victorian paintings."A BEAUTIFUL PRODUCTION BY PAVILION BOOKS WITH GLORIOUS FULL PAGE PRINTS AND VERY GOOD INTRODUCTION AND NOTES FOR EACH PAINTING BY RUSSELL ASH.ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ART BOOKS.0nly a 25 page paper back but a lovely little taster into Tissot's extraordinarily detailed work with informative narrative. The book contains 40 full page Tissot plates with legends, together with a short biography of the artist. Good value second-hand purchase, promptly delivered. Highly recommended.
